I GIOCHI
Liceo Classico Tommaso Campanella.
Ho girato a lungo e in largo l'Italia.

Finding the words, the right words to describe myself, to describe myself, is difficult; I'm not capable of describing myself.
Those who know me well call me "Logo" (Word), but I feel like a "Soy" (I am).
My name is Vincenzo Calafiore, born and raised in the "Rione"
(A rione is a small part of a city. It has precise boundaries. Rioni have a strong historical and cultural identity. The people who live there often feel a strong sense of belonging) of Santa Caterina.
In 1946, the city of Reggio Calabria was emerging exhausted from the Second World War. The entire area of the Rione underwent a slow but tenacious reconstruction. Santa Caterina was therefore a recently rebuilt neighborhood, characterized by wide streets that intersect at right angles. This modern layout was decided immediately after the tragic earthquake of 1908, which razed the city to the ground.
At that time, in 1946, surviving poverty and misery was
A daily struggle.
The nearby hills offered the opportunity to gather fruit and wild herbs, the sea offered the opportunity to collect limpets, sea snails, and sea urchins. With aluminum forks tied to a stick, we made rudimentary spearfishing spears (fricine), and we practiced underwater fishing, always near the rocks; the favorite prey were moray eels and octopuses.
GAMES
The legendary ball cart.
It was the favorite game of the boys of the past; in its simplicity, it required quick reflexes, creativity, technical skill, and even a little courage.
It's the ball cart, an old game that the boys of the past built themselves by assembling a wooden board with ball bearings.
In the post-World War II years, car traffic was so sparse that it didn't pose a serious safety risk to young players, who weren't particularly bothered by the presence of cars. Indeed, on the roads, particularly steep ones were the preferred ones. It was not uncommon in those years to witness the dizzying descent of "carrettini," a type of vehicle that only functioned autonomously downhill and was built by the driver himself from scrap wooden planks nailed together to form a triangle, with four ball bearings or other wheels of various kinds at the ends.
The kids would go to the garages and ask the mechanics for old ball bearings.
The problem was finding them still in good condition; there wasn't the money to buy new ones.
Then they would look for wide planks and a central bolt that served as a steering pivot.
Two "wheels" were attached to a sort of handlebar, usually a piece of broomstick, which operated via a rope tied to the ends. When pulled by the driver, this allowed him to make turns that often ended in a rollover, since the brakes couldn't be relied upon, as they were often made of sticks tied to the frame and angled toward the rear axle.
When you wanted to brake, you simply pulled up on the front part of the stick, which lowered the rear part, causing it to scrape against the road surface. Naturally, downhill rides were the most popular and could even be shared with multiple "drivers."
This was the most beloved and favorite game among us boys and girls!
School...studies...a sore point!
At school, from elementary school to middle school, I wasn't much of a performer; I was rather inattentive, always with my head in the clouds, and ready to escape as soon as possible. I was sick of the "sea," which I reached as soon as I could.
I could.
The three worst years of my life were middle school. My grades, except for History and Italian, were terrible. In math, I never even managed to get above a 3 or 4! But even today, at my age, I'm still awful at math. I lived those years with great sadness.
Tommaso Campanella Classical High School.
The turning point, the great turning point, happened here at that Classical High School,
"Tommaso Campanella."
Ancient Greek was the subject I loved most. I studied this language for all five years of my studies. The goal was to understand the history, culture, and way of thinking of ancient Greece.
Something inside me, a strong pull, a dream I had to realize, made me interrupt my studies: the call of the sea!
Young and with that dream in hand, I embarked on a military career. I enlisted in the Navy, and after failing some tests, I was diverted to another Military Academy, where, in addition to studies, there was also "Service." I traveled far and wide throughout Italy.
But I never abandoned my studies, which I completed, eventually attending university! I left in my third year when I became a father, to devote myself entirely to my daughter.
And now here I am, faced with my years and my time, with my life experiences, my mistakes, my falls, my defeats; but I have always gotten back up and continued to fight for a better life, for myself, for my family, which I have imbued with dignity and pride, culture, and love for the great beauty: my life and that of others.
That's why today, in this time, I can say: "SOY, YO SOY!"
But also the good fortune of being here, now, in this damned millennium of ruins and disasters, and still wanting to live and love, still writing despite everything. Because you know, life isn't like this hell. Life is what's inside you, what's inside us, what you write every day, page after page, and all the while feeling the thrill of love, the desire to reach the seashore every day to begin a new journey! This is the good fortune, the good fortune of being, of being here, of still being able to say this in this damned millennium:
I love, I love you!
What a hangover of happiness life is!
